Purpose: The purpose of this study was to understand and explore the experiences of nursing students in writing a reflective journal while learning nursing skills in a fundamental nursing practicum.
Methods: The data were collected from November 23 to 26, 2020 through focus group interviews with sophomore nursing students who took a fundamental nursing practicum and wrote reflective journals. The collected data were analyzed using qualitative content analysis.
Results: As a result of the study, 15 sub-themes, seven themes, and three categories were derived: ¡°practical reflection experience¡±, ¡°the difficulty in writing¡±, and ¡°finding that I had grown¡±. In other words, writing a journal of reflection in fundamental nursing practicum was difficult for nursing students difficulty in writing, but they made up for their deficiencies in nursing skill performance through self-reflection, which reduced the fear of learning nursing skills and increased proficiency. This helped to build confidence and a sense of accomplishment. Through this process, they formed a sense of identity as nursing students and found themselves growing.
Conclusion: The method of writing a reflective journal for nursing students in a fundamental nursing practicum could be used as a learner-centered teaching strategy that could improve learning outcomes.
